HTIL Scholarship Presentation 2018-2019

For the 3rd consecutive year, HTIL continued its mission of impacting the lives of students from the Barrett Town Community in St James (Jamaica) through its annual scholarship program. Last school year, HTIL bequeathed stipends and back to school supplies to 9 scholars; this school year, HTIL bequeathed stipends and back to school supplies to 14 students.

The 14 students for this 2018-2019 installment of the award were 12 academic awardees: Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) 2018 students(Okere Bremmer, Jada Kerr, Jada Finlatter and Dauntay Haughton); 2017 recipients (Amuiki Beckford, Wantonia Lyons, Rhamone Lewis, Daniela Bucknor); 2016 recipients (Romique Leslie, Khaleil Lewis, Simonique Simpson); and Jaheim Gordon a replacement for one 2016 recipient who lost eligibility. The other 2 students were soccer scholar awardees are Darnel Brissett and Ramapolia Kerr.

Students with the certificate and gifts

At a HTIL scholarship award ceremony the recipients received their gifts: each received a stipend of $33,000 ($250 USD) along with back to school stationery supplies (backpack, notebooks, pens, pencils, markers, crayons, geometry set, scientific calculator, a 10 GB USB drive, binders, folder leaves and other miscellaneous items). One student – Khaleil Lewis – was absent due to illness (His award was collected by his mom.)

The event was chaired and organized by HTIL scholarship coordinator Mrs. Margaret Harwood-Farquharson (a past student of Barrett Town Primary, who currently teaches at John Rollins Success Primary). Prior to the students receiving their gifts, they were treated to nuggets of wisdom and encouragement by keynote speaker Mr. Elvis Farquharson (Children’s Officer – Child Protection and Family Services Agency). The presentations of gifts was championed by Mr. Francois Lawrence who was representing Cornwall College graduating class of 1991 as a sponsor of soccer scholar awardee Rampolia Kerr (who represents his high school soccer team).

The students and parents alike expressed their gratitudes and commended the organization for the outreach and impact the scholarship program has had so far.

(The video below, features Okere Bremmer giving vote of thanks during the award ceremony.)

HTIL sincerely and highly commends the donors for their generous support in making this impact possible.
